Euphoria was born about a year later, around the same time that industry-savvy musicians began using the Internet to promote their work. The Internet Underground Music Archive (IUMA) was Euphoria's first online home, and by 1996, the cyber venue had gained such momentum it became the subject of a Time magazine article, which noted Euphoria as one of IUMA's early loyalists. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; That same year, Ramm inked a deal with Six Degrees Records, and his eponymous debut, Euphoria was released in 1999. The album exploded with licensing opportunities. From Apple Computer and the “Keynotes” of legendary CEO Steve Jobs, to multiple uses in shows like “Malcolm In The Middle” and “Roswell,” plus international trailers for “Vanilla Sky” and “Hidalgo,”. Songs from Euphoria launched a sonic profile that helped make Euphoria a valuable commodity in the film and television world. A high profile licensing use by Nissan, brought the Euphoria song “Delirium” into the mainstream, as it crossed over into high chart positions on U.S. AAA radio and into advertising culture. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In 2001, the second album, Beautiful My Child, was released, further garnering attention from film, television and advertising elite. The single, “Sweet Rain”, was used by Apple CEO Steve Jobs, this time to launch MacWorld 2002. "Little Gem," was used on the hit TV series, "CSI," making its way onto the show's soundtrack. Pop culture shows such as “Oprah” used “Devil May Care”, broadening Euphoria’s catalogue for future uses. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; With its third release, Precious Time, Euphoria took its sound to new levels, partnering with internationally acclaimed vocalists who made a unique mark on the album's tracks and helped create full-length vocal tracks, which enjoyed radio play and licensing success in the U.S. and abroad. The most noticeable thumbprint on the album is the emergence of Ken Ramm as a producer. “I felt it was time that I stepped out and took control. Precious Time was, “my baby”, and I wanted the artistic thrust of the album to fall on me. I will always look on Precious Time as when I finally stepped out with a voice of my own in the production world.” &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Tracks like "The Getaway," which Ramm names as one of his favorites on Precious Time, will have any Massive Attack fan conjuring memories of dark and dreamy electronic hits like "Angel." Also noticeable on Precious Time is the influence of harmonica player Howard Levy who helps to give the album an undertone of Chicago blues, “like the distorted sound of Paul Butterfield.”&nbsp; “My music is a fusion&nbsp;of forms...” &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Probably the biggest departure on the Precious Time album was the inclusion of full-length vocal tracks by singers Tina Dico and Tracy Bonham. Dico, highly regarded for her stunning vocal contribution to Zero 7's album, “When It Falls”, had just released her international debut, In The Red, which was produced by Chris Potter (The Verve). Potter and several other influential industry figures suggested the collaboration between Dico and Ramm, who had both, coincidentally, previously been recording at Metropolis in West London. "I had heard her music,” Ramm says of Dico. "I just had a feeling." &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Going with that feeling led to the inclusion of two vocal tracks by Dico, "Blue," a song that perfectly balances acoustic and electro components, and the more aggressive, rock influenced "Sinners and Saints," where Ms. Dico moves from deep, sultry tones to high-pitched wails for emotional choral components. The first track on which Tracy Bonham contributes, "Precious Time," is heavily influenced compositionally by Brazilian music in terms of its harmony and chord structure, Ramm notes. But the track also marks a distinct shift in the flow of the album, he adds, transitioning it from rock influenced to more of a sensual, dreamy mood. And Bonham, who many know as a critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter and electric-violin-wielding rocker, shows a softer, gentler vocal side with both "Precious Time" and "Anyone Can Lose." &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Listeners could easily imagine any of these vocal tracks being featured in a film or serving as background music for a television show. Ramm was conscious of those mediums favoring strictly instrumental tracks. So additional tracks were mixed without the vocals. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; That mindset paid off, with highly regarded film director Michael Mann and creator&nbsp;David Milch&nbsp;using “Blue” and BMC track, “Devil May Care” for the HBO show “Luck” starring Dustin Hoffman. C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation once again stepped up, choosing the Precious Time bonus track, “Sleeper”, as a high profile opener for the dark episode,&nbsp;“Up In Smoke.” &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Though Ramm's aspirations for Euphoria and for future releases, very much include continued work in the worlds of film and television, he is cautious not to create his music solely with any one market in mind. "I am open to all kinds of creativity with Euphoria," says Ramm. "It's not a work of hire. It's a work of heart." Something that inspires Ramm on to continued creativity were his studies with the legendary, highly regarded guitar player and instructor, Mick Goodrick. “When I met Mick, he was living and teaching privately in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I had the good fortune to be living in Boston at the time, and the even greater fortune to have Mick accept me as a student,” Ramm says. Like the esteemed teachers and educators such as, Nadia Boulanger, Charlie Banacos and Gunther Schuller, Mick Goodrick’s name is now being recognized as a player/educator of the highest order.&nbsp;Jazz Times has called him “perhaps the most influential mentor in the history of jazz guitar.” Ramm: “A musical colleague of mine jokes with me, in a positive way, about my chordal knowledge and use of harmony in Euphoria’s music. None of that would have happened if it had not been for my time at Berklee College of Music that lead to my musical relationship with Mick. Since his passing in 2022, I’ve been digging into some of the fine books Mick authored or co-authored about the guitar. Recorded at Grant Avenue Studio, with the brilliant Jim Frank (Peter Gabriel, Bob Seeger, Alice Cooper, Lou Reed) as recording engineer. Ramm: “We really did try and get this ‘dated’ sound on the drums. The song was for a character who had been a “one hit wonder” in the ’60’s. In November, Euphoria is signed to EMI Publishing. The album is produced by Garry Hughes (Bjork, Sly and Robbie, Killing Joke), who also contributes keyboards and programming. Tom Elmhirst (David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Adele) steps up as the recording’s mix engineer. Notable guests on the record include Geddy Lee, Anne Dudley (Art of Noise), gospel singer Juliette Roberts, and Soft Machine bassist Roy Babbington. While praising the album profusely, critics struggle to define its innovative and eclectic sound. Ramm's simple definition: "My music is a fusion of forms." “Delirium”, the opening track on Euphoria, becomes a hit after scoring high-rotation play on such influential American Triple-A radio stations as Los Angeles' KCRW, Denver's KBCO and San Francisco's KFOG. In Canada, "Delirium" also scored at modern rock radio thanks to Toronto radio station CFNY. Ramm: “Denzyl was Steve Jobs’ music supervisor in North America. He took a liking to Euphoria, licensed ‘Delirium,’ and took it to Jobs, who was a very hands-on guy." The track passed muster and it was used to by Mr. Jobs in his famous ‘Keynotes’ presentations. ‘Delirium’ is placed in a commercial for Nissan. Ramm: "Eric Grunbaum, a creative director at [major ad agency) TBWA/Chiat/Day in L.A., was looking for a piece of music to use in a car ad he was doing for the Nissan Infiniti SUV. He was listening to KCRW in LA one night, heard ‘Delirium,’ called the station to find out about the song, and went on to license it. The commercial premiered in the NBA playoff finals, with the LA Lakers playing, so it was a very high-profile ad.” This placement was cited in a Business 2.0 feature story in 2003 as a pivotal moment in the use of music in commercials, one that spurred close links between Madison Avenue and tastemaker station KCRW. "A star soundtrack for an ad was born," they wrote. “Delirium” quickly attracts the attention of other music supervisors for film, television and commercials. It was featured as the international trailer for the 2001 Cameron Crowe / Tom Cruise movie Vanilla Sky and one of the “Delirium” remixes is used in a key episode of Malcolm In The Middle. Sci Fi show Roswell makes excellent use of “The Dreamer” and helps to showcase the diversity of licenses that Euphoria is capable of getting. Six Degrees release a label compilation, Your Musical Passport. The radio edit of “Delirium” is selected as the opening track. Other artists featured include Willy Porter, Bob Holroyd, Banco de Gaia, and Roy Nathanson with Elvis Costello. In October, Ken Ramm begins recording the second Euphoria album in London, Wales and at the SARM West studio. The album is produced by Garry Hughes (Bjork, Sly and Robbie, Killing Joke), who also contributes keyboards and programming, as well as co-writing “Beautiful My Child” and “Little Gem” with Ramm. The album is engineered by Donal Hodgson (Sting, Counting Crows). Prominent players on the record include programmer Sean Spuehler (Madonna, Blur, William Orbit), pedal steel guitarist B.J. As with Euphoria, its tracks are licensed extensively for film, television and commercial use. Ramm: "The album got me introduced to the people at [hit TV series] CSI. Their music supervisor Jason Alexander is a big Euphoria fan. He took the song 'Little Gem' to open a CSI episode. It eventually ended up on the soundtrack release, along with The Who, Robbie Robertson, Zero 7, The Chambers Brothers, New Order and other artists I admire so much.” The first single from Beautiful My Child, "Sweet Rain" is remixed by such notable remixers as Fila Brazilia and Faze Action. A video for it was shot in L.A. by famed SFX company Rhythm &amp; Hues Studios (Superman Returns, X-Men) and it featured the L.A. Gospel Choir. The track was used in the acclaimed documentary film, Melungeon Voices (2007) and as the high profile trailer. Documentary Down Home (2010) followed, with both projects marking the beginning of Ken’s relationship with North Carolinian director and cinematographer Warren Gentry. Guests on the album include acclaimed vocalists Tina Dico (Zero 7) and Tracy Bonham and harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy (Bela Fleck and The Flecktones). Levy played on the first single, the driving "Back Against The Wall." Ramm: "Army guys really liked that song. There was a military base in Louisiana that had a Triple A station nearby, and they kept getting requests for it." "Blue," the second single from Precious Time, is named Single of the Week on iTunes Europe. As with the first two albums, many of the tracks were licensed. A remixed version of "Blue" was placed in Luck, a TV series created by Michael Mann (Thief, Manhunter) with HBO that starred Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. Ramm: "It's a high-speed remix that they used in a club scene.” Mann also licensed "Devil May Care" from Beautiful My Child for the series. A bonus cut on the iTunes version of the album, "Sleeper" (also featuring Dico), was licensed to CSI. Further dialogue leads to a deal with AWAL. Label ‘Music Consultant’ Sophie Townsend comes up with the idea of a simultaneous release for a Euphoria instrumental and vocal album. In August (27th), Euphoria releases E4: The Instrumental Album and E4: The Vocal Album globally via AWAL. Ramm: “It’s a bit of an ‘odds &amp; sods’ type of album. Tracks that were ‘in the can’ mixed with some originals. The class was very knowledgable and Peter really gave me a boost at an opportune time when I needed it.” In October, Ramm travels to North Carolina to work with cinematographer Warren Gentry and shoot two videos, “N'Awlins [The Lumber River Chronicles]” and the highly regarded “Back Against The Wall”. The Gentry shoot travels the course of the famous Cape Fear River through Raleigh, Lumberton County and Wilmington. “This shoot was an important turning point in my life, much like my experience with Peter. The “Back Against The Wall” video is still a visual high point for me. As part of the same trip, Ramm travels to London U.K. for meetings with Apple and others. Connected by Denzyl Feigelson, Ramm jams with the superb U.K. musician Nitin Sawhney, at his studio in Brixton. On November 4, 2016, Ramm hears an interview on Connecticut radio station WPKN. The radio show, called “Connections”, is hosted by WPKN DJ, Eric Cocks. On that show, Ramm hears NYC musician, record producer and recording engineer Steve Addabbo in conversation with Cocks. Leath explains that “Spark the Universe”, a track that appeared on Ken Ramm’s 1984 EP, Ramm, had become an underground cult hit in England, after being featured at a high-end London listening room called ‘Brilliant Corners’. Ramm signs a deal with Emotional Rescue to release “Spark The Universe”. In April, after a jam session, Ramm begins working with Grammy-winning producer and recording engineer Steve Addabbo at his New York City studio, Shelter Island Sound Studios. Addabbo helped launch the careers of Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin, and has produced and/or engineered for artists including&nbsp;Bobby McFerrin,&nbsp;Bob Dylan,&nbsp;Eric Andersen,&nbsp;Loudon Wainwright III,&nbsp;Jeff Buckley,&nbsp;Gary Lucas, Jane Olivor,&nbsp;Olivia Newton-John, The Manhattans and&nbsp;Dar Williams. An acclaimed mix engineer, he earned a Grammy for his work on the Bob Dylan box set&nbsp; Bootleg 12: The Cutting Edge. “Spark The Universe” is reissued in October, along with a Dance and Dub remix, plus a Discomix from the label’s own Chuggy. Leath recommends that Ramm contact dublab, an L.A.-based internet and terrestrial radio station with a global reach and a stellar reputation that included The Guardian terming it the best such station in the world. Ramm connects with dublab Program Director Alejandro Cohen, and a very productive relationship ensues. In November 2017, Ramm guests with Alejandro Cohen on the dublab show “Elevation Through Sound”. “This was a thoroughly enjoyable two hour interview with Ale. I got to feature a number of Euphoria tracks that I always wanted to hear on the radio, remixes that were very rare and in some cases, underexposed. Ramm: “It amazed me that Spark The Universe had this ’staying’ power. A well known and respected German DJ, Klaus Schulte, had been spinning it at “Brilliant Corners” in East London. Stuart Leath of Emotional Rescue heard the track there. I couldn’t believe that encounter eventually brought me back to L.A., talking about Spark and beyond, plus playing live on-air with Aaron.” In November 2018, Ramm is interviewed by top British radio host Steve Lamacq for a show on BBC Radio 6, called Good Day Bad Day.The theme of the program is music to play on good days and bad days, and Ramm chose, respectively, Aretha Franklin’s “Spirit In The Dark” and The Who’s “I Can See For Miles.” Lamacq is intrigued by Ramm’s list of memorable shows he has seen in Toronto, from the Beatles to The Who, MC5 and The Troggs. Ramm: “Steve was very gracious, giving me air time to promote myself and Euphoria. I know it was not the ’norm’ for that part of the show to have musicians on. I made the most of it and got some very good response from listeners and Steve himself.”<img width="853" height="1707" width_o="853" height_o="1707" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/72ff85714af207096411db6b5f65e537b3aa339dc7b74a5f2878d8589cb82fc0/146263.svg" data-mid="70753935" border="0" data-scale="5" data-no-zoom data-icon-mode src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/853/i/72ff85714af207096411db6b5f65e537b3aa339dc7b74a5f2878d8589cb82fc0/146263.svg" /> 2019Ramm makes multiple trips to NYC to work with Steve Addabbo on new Euphoria material. “Steve has a tremendous collection of vintage gear, in and outside the box, and I wanted to do things out of the box,” Ramm explains. “For the upcoming Euphoria record I’ve aimed to do things old-school, working together in the same room.” Ramm is invited to dublab’s 20th anniversary party in Los Angeles on September 21, 2020. This is a ‘full on’ event for dublab, with at least ten stages at the Bedrock studio and rehearsal space going on simultaneously throughout the event. Ken performs a set of original compositions, solo, on guitar, to a well received response. Ramm: “I had always wanted to do a solo set of my material. I rehearsed for a month beforehand, picking the material to make it flow like one continuous thirty minute piece. Magically it all went well. The two hour show features Ramm reflecting upon his musical influences. Ken also records music for Euphoria with Patrick Gleeson, the legendary synthesist, famous for his work with Herbie Hancock and for his sonic collaborations on the score for the Francis Ford Coppola film, “Apocalypse Now”. In July, Ramm interviews pioneering electronic musician and composer Patrick Gleeson for dublab. The two artists hit it off when collaborating musically. Gleeson is featured on the upcoming Ramm/Euphoria track, “Deep Calls Out”. “Patrick is a fascinating person to converse with, one with a huge range of experience and deep knowledge,” says Ramm. As well as working on new Euphoria material, Ramm continues to explore his earlier material and plans reissues. “I’ll be doing what they call ‘Deep Dives’, and re-releasing my back catalogue of music,” he explains. “That includes Euphoria music that has not been released, as well as going back to the beginnings of my career with my 1980 solo debut album, “Dragon.” That critically-acclaimed record, featuring elements of jazz-rock fusion and prog rock, has never been released digitally. BFD/SONY/The Orchard, the highly-regarded label and distributor, is in place for a world wide release of these upcoming reissues and the new Euphoria material. Ramm is also planning a revised reissue of his Ramm EP, one including a previously unreleased track, that had never been released digitally, from those sessions, “Pave My Way To Tibet.” Ramm: “Pave…” was being bootlegged at ridiculous prices. I wanted to step up and release a high quality version. The theme,“Songs For Film And Television”, resonated strongly for Ken and “Euphoria”. Ramm: “It was great to have the opportunity to showcase a number of songs, both classical and popular, that have connected with me through the years. I believe acknowledging influences is a very important part of artistic development.”&nbsp; On April 17th, Ramm officially signed an international deal with BFD that furthered his connection with The Orchard and Sony Music Entertainment. Ramm: “I look forward to working with Bob Frank and his team. Having a release on an international scale, will build on past successes I have had.”&nbsp; Continuing his collaboration with co producer Steve Addabbo in NYC, the two prepare the release of a six track EP for the song, “Deep Calls Out”. The release, slated for the first quarter of 2022, includes variations from Rock, Alternative Dance, Pop, Ambient, Acoustic and Dub genres. Highly regarded photographer, Christine Alicino, who has been the visual muse for all the “Euphoria” albums, is on board with her stunning visuals for the EP. “I’m very pleased how the EP has turned out,” says Ramm. “Especially exciting is the depth of variation in the song we were able to capture. Played in the excellent company of The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Kinks and David Bowie, on the station that the New Yorker’s David Owen referred to as, “... the greatest radio station in the world”, Euphoria was in fine company! Why? Well … read below. The Musical Purpose … Why do artists go into music? Well, we love music. We were inspired by artists we admired, no matter what era, generation or style … and we may have, perhaps naively, felt we could make a difference. Can you? Well, in some ways … yes. An artist has an artistic obligation to be true to themselves and their colleagues. Will the artist ratify that need? Who can tell? One person’s ceiling. is another person’s floor. Every artist and situation are different. The Corporate Sector … If you find a label and team that are supportive, stick with them. Those kind of people are like diamonds … rare to find. The Musicians …&nbsp; Sticking together and being supportive needs to be embraced and encouraged. Need some help understanding and dealing with it all? This is what I found on a self-imposed sabbatical that I took from the music industry in 2023. I decided I would immerse myself in two forms of therapy, on a research level, that would give me further insight into the people I was working with. I chose to explore Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT). I grew to believe that many people in life might possibly benefit from these two forms of therapy. The goal being enhanced communication, collaboration, and teamwork. The two begin work on more tracks for the upcoming release of the Euphoria album, “Five Times A Charm”. Ramm: “It is great to be back at Shelter Island Sound, in NYC, with Steve Addabbo. Shelter is such a great studio, technically and spiritually. It always reminds me of why I got into music in the first place.” Ken also collaborates on a new track, for FTAC, with singer/songwriter Raena Jade. Ramm: “Steve introduced me to Raena. She instantly liked the track I presented her with and added some terrific musical and lyrical ideas. I’m very pleased how the song is working out. Raena is very original in her ideas and vocal approach, something that I am always reaching for in a Euphoria collaboration.” The track, initially recorded in Toronto with programming by Birmingham, U.K. ex pat James Mulvale, features Ramm playing both 12 string slide and electric guitars. The Signature electric guitar, used on the recording, was a specially built instrument by Canadian luthier/aerial photographer Russ Heinl. “It recorded beautifully …”, says Ramm. A sympathetic drum part, recorded in NYC, by Steve Addabbo’s colleague Alex Alexander, added to the dynamics of the song. Ramm: “Alex really added the touch of rhythmic humanity that a good song needs. It really makes the music breathe and flow.” Next up for Ken and Euphoria is an excellent foray into the world of ‘Neue Classical’. Euphoria’s “Come Bach To Me” brings in the European classical clarinetist, Lone Madsen. The Danish born Ms. Madsen was schooled at the prestigious, ‘The Julliard School’ in NYC and winner of the “Classical Musician of the Year” accolade at the 2023 MICANNES Awards. Lone combined her talents with that of Ken’s twelve string and the result creates a fusion of music that is quite unique. Ramm: “On a trip to London, U.K., I was introduced to Lone through highly regarded music publisher Eddie Levy.” The introduction proved a success. “Come Bach To Me” was originally intended as a solo guitar piece. Instead, the two musicians blend their musical worlds to create a duo recording that altered Ken’s thinking of the track’s focus and direction. “I love crossing genres ...”, says Ramm. “New sounds emerge and create colours one never imagined.” Next stop is further collaboration with Steve Addabbo. Ramm: “We’re very excited how it all is going. The stove is hot and creativity is blooming. It’s an exciting time!”&nbsp; One of the great things that can happen to an artist is to have a song re-emerge. “Sleeper”&nbsp;is such a song. Ramm explains, “This song, from the third Euphoria album, “Precious Time”, somehow got lost in the ‘shuffle of time’ that happens with paradigm shifts.” Originally a ‘bonus track’ on iTunes, “Sleeper”, a co-write with Danish vocalist/songwriter Tina Dico, was not included in digital platform availability. The song first appeared on the CBS TV hit series,&nbsp;“C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation”. Thanks to Concord Music Group, that omission has now been rectified. Ramm: “Tina really turns in a terrific vocal performance on this song, that has very heartfelt lyrics. I’m so pleased Concord stepped up.” The song is now available on all digital music platforms. What better way to end off 2024 than recording more music for “5TAC”. In November, Ramm and colleague, Steve Addabbo, made major progress. “We had a great week of solid recording”, says Ramm. Joined in the studio, by vocalist Raena Jade, the trio collaborated on several vocal performances. “Being in the studio together creates a whole different kind of momentum”, Ramm explains. “We can do a lot long distance nowadays, recording has come a long way, but the direct communication and interaction of artists is extremely rewarding.”&nbsp; A new exciting addition to the project is vocalist Izzy Durso. Referred by top knotch musician, Marlon Saunders, Izzy brought a powerful voice to “5TAC”. Ramm: “There are times when someone really gives you a new perspective on a song. Izzy was able to do that, and more. I’m so pleased she chose to get involved.”&nbsp; Ace drummer Alex Alexander returned also, to lend his drum stylings, from power to grace, on the tracks. Ramm: “Alex has so much experience and a great sense of time. Rhythm is SO big in the music of the 21st century. I don’t think I can emphasize that enough. The beat really does ‘go on’. The “Murder Ballad” ... the musical version of the “Film Noir” art form. Ramm: “I often tell musicians that each song is a film ... a story in itself. I’ve always been fascinated by the film noir concept and the murder ballad, a centuries old song form. I used to travel quite often to Wales, a place with much deep and dark history. Promising myself, one day I would write a haunted tale set in that part of the world, collaborator Raena Jade and I have lived up to that internal promise. I can’t wait to share it with people.”&nbsp; “Rainsongs” ... sounds interesting , doesn’t it? How many songs have ‘rain’ in their title? I bet you can think of quite a few. Ramm: “I’m always been interested in how many songs have water associated with them. Is it cleansing? Sadness? The purifying nature of water has many ‘double-edged’ meanings. We decided to explore that, and more, with a track on the new album. I’d had the chords and arrangement in my head for quite a while, finally adding lyrics to complete part of the story. I’m very pleased how it has turned out! The ‘spiritual vs. secular’ is a controversial topic. “I always marveled how writers like Ray Charles, Pete Seeger, Aretha Franklin and others were able to incorporate that topic into their music ...”, Ramm says. “A song like ‘Turn, Turn, Turn’ was able to take wording from an ancient source and turn it into something topical and contemporary. It is a song form well worth exploring and we’ve set out to do this, on another track on the album. It really is all about whether the topic, in the song, reaches people and makes an impact. Communication is what the art form is all about.” Ramm: “There are moments when art and timing come together so well. Such was the case when I travelled to Shelter Island Sound in July - August for a major session on “Five Times A Charm”. All the participants really elevated their game and delivered in stunning fashion. In the case of Spark The Universe it had exactly that impact. A mixture of late-60s psychedelic homage, early 80s new wave, white boy soul, plus a good dose of dub, all wrapped around a killer hook and super tight production and a hit was surely made. Increasingly heard in the sets of the more discerning DJs, Spark The Universe has become a cult play and with second hand prices now in three figures, a reissue was timely. Before going on to carve a successful career in 'electronica' project, Euphoria, Toronto's Ken Ramm had shown his considerable writing and playing ability with the 1981 debut LP Dragon and this 1983 follow up, known simply as Ramm. Coming together through a meeting with a then relatively unknown producer, Daniel Lanois, via a mutual interest in tape loops and dubbing, Ramm was formed. Recording at Lanois' Grant Avenue Studios, their interest in mixing past and present technology, with multiple digital delay units, harmonizers and other effect processors allowed Ramm and Lanois to explore using the studio as an instrument alongside real musicianship. Backwards guitars, tremolo bar dives and guitar harmonics are incorporated with the vocals and percussion to perfection. With a 'Dance' and alternative 'Dub', the song's hypnotic and dreamy feel superimposed over beats pin-pointed to the later Euphoria project and with the addition of a latter day 'Discomix', from the labels' own Chuggy, a ‘new edition’ was born. Airplay and interviews on dublab in L.A. and spins on WPKN help to create a new following for the song, while DJs worldwide continue to give Spark The Universe a deserved place on contemporary dance
